As George Merrick's city, founded in 1925, matured in the 1960s, a group of businessmen formed the Ponce de Leon Development Association to promote the continued improvement of their commercial district. They campaigned for streetlights, better roads and sidewalks, modernized infrastructure, zoning changes and incentives, better promotion of the city and good business practices.
The result of their efforts has been a great improvement in the quantity and quality of businesses moving into downtown. They have done much to help earn a sterling reputation for Coral Gables as a vibrant location for multinational firms to locate.
The name of the organization was changed to the Ponce de Leon Business Association in early 2004.
Now, the Ponce Corridor is entering an exciting new phase of mixed-use development, encouraging the thoughtful progress of magnificent properties that artfully combine residences and offices with parking, galleries, merchants, restaurants, spas, banks and a myriad of businesses all within a leisurely walk. The free Coral Gables Trolley, running north and south along Ponce de Leon Boulevard, provides easy access to all these locations, as well as connecting to the vast Metrorail and Metrobus system county-wide.
The future of the Ponce Corridor promises an exquisite experience to those that live and work here.
